Online Marketplace and Facebook Group Scams

7.31.2024Alert

Scammers target localized groups on Facebook with posts that either encourage others to share (missing children, lost pets) or falsely advertise pets for adoption, homes for rent, or products to purchase. Groups such as the following are targeted: Little Rock & Surrounding Area Yardsale, What’s happening in Jonesboro…, Searcy News You Should Know, Concerned Citizens of Cabot, etc.

Before you share a post or initiate a purchase, go to the original poster’s main Facebook profile page (not the “Marketplace seller profile”), and look for the following red flags:

  1. Their current city is either hidden or is not local.
  2. The profile was very recently created and has little to no activity.
  3. Little to no friends/followers.
  4. Overuse of the word “kindly” in conversation.
  5. The product is grossly underpriced.

If any of these flags are present, the post is not legitimate and should be reported. This will help prevent others from falling victim to the scam. Scammers can pose as both buyers or sellers!

Contact or visit your local banking center if you need help with a purchase or payment.
